CBSE Class 12 Pass Rate Drop 2026 — What Changes for 2027

CBSE Class 12 pass rate fell to 85.20% in 2026. Rescans, mix-ups, re-evaluation, fee cuts, leadership change and what to expect in 2027.

In short: The CBSE Class 12 pass percentage fell to 85.20% in 2026, down 3.19 points from 88.39%. The drop coincided with the first use of On-Screen Marking (OSM), but it also coincided with West Asia exam disruptions and a special assessment scheme, so the drop cannot be pinned on OSM alone. What is well documented is that the scanning and evaluation process had real faults: 68,018 answer books were rescanned, 13,583 had to be marked manually, and about 1.6 lakh candidates applied for re-evaluation or verification. For 2027, the key decision on whether OSM continues was still pending in the sources we found.

Why Did It Drop? Three Overlapping Explanations

No single cause has been proven. Here is what each explanation rests on.

ExplanationEvidenceHow strong
OSM process faultsReports of blurred scans, missing pages, mismatched answer books, and re-evaluation score jumpsProcess faults are well documented. Whether they moved the national pass rate is not established
West Asia disruptions and special assessmentET Education reported foreign schools saw a sharper decline amid disruptions in the regionSupported for overseas schools. Does not explain India fully
New assessment schemeThe School Education Secretary attributed the dip to a new assessment scheme (Asianet News)Official view. Details were limited

CBSE's position was that the marking scheme was unchanged and only the mode of checking differed. Critics pointed to the scale of complaints. Both can be true: the system can be faulty in places without being the sole reason for the national figure.

Students also reported payment gateway failures and portal glitches when trying to get scanned copies, and the deadline was extended more than once.

One evaluator told The Hindu, on condition of anonymity, that the decision to use OSM was communicated only about two weeks before evaluation began and that some scripts were not fully scanned and were rejected by evaluators. That is one person's account, but it matches the wider reporting on the rushed rollout.

How the System Responded

ActionDetail
Fee cutsScanned copy from Rs 700 to Rs 100, verification from Rs 500 to Rs 100, re-evaluation from Rs 100 to Rs 25 per question (Times of India)
RefundsFee refunded if marks increase
DeadlinesScanned copy window extended. Re-evaluation window held June 2 to 7
Re-evaluation resultsReleased from June 21. Around 1.39 lakh results declared that day. CBSE later said over 99.7% of applications had outcomes (Times of India)
LeadershipThe Centre replaced the CBSE Chairman and Secretary on June 2, 2026 and set up a probe into how the OSM service was procured (Economic Times)
New leadershipLokhande Prashant Sitaram as Chairperson, Varun Bhardwaj as Secretary

What Re-evaluation Actually Changed

CBSE has not published official data on how many students saw marks go up. Reported individual cases ranged widely. The Hindu cited a Physics score moving from 71 to 90 and a History score from 74 to 97 in one school, while another widely reported student whose answer sheet had been swapped saw only a two-mark total increase and no change in Physics. Treat anecdotes as examples, not averages.

What Changes for 2027

QuestionWhat we know
Will OSM continue for Class 12?CBSE said in June it would consult stakeholders. Ministry sources said it was likely to continue. We found no final announcement as of October 28, 2026
Will OSM extend to Class 10?Under consideration
Will post-result fees stay low?Not announced. The 2026 cut is a precedent, not a rule
Is there new leadership?Yes, since June 2026
Is a procurement inquiry running?Ordered in June 2026. We found no final outcome

What Class 12 Students Should Do Now

  1. Write for the scanner. Follow our 15 rules for OSM answers.
  2. Show all steps so partial marks are easy to award. See step marking.
  3. Know the re-evaluation route before results arrive: scanned copy, verification and re-evaluation steps.
  4. Do not panic about the 85.20% figure. It describes last year's cohort and conditions, not your odds.
  5. Keep your target realistic but ambitious, and build your plan around your Class 12 board strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did OSM cause the pass rate to fall?

That has not been proven. The drop coincided with OSM, but disruptions in West Asia and a new assessment scheme were also cited. What is documented is that the OSM process had faults that affected some students.

Was the marking scheme changed?

CBSE said no. Its chairperson said the marking scheme remained exactly the same and only the medium of checking changed.

How many students got higher marks after re-evaluation?

CBSE has not released an official figure. More than 1.6 lakh students applied for re-evaluation or verification, and individual reports show a wide range of outcomes.

Can my marks go down after re-evaluation?

We did not find a clear official statement on this in the 2026 sources we reviewed. Check CBSE's notice when the 2027 window opens before you apply.

Will the same problems happen in 2027?

Unknown. The board has new leadership and a review underway. Preparing for a scan-friendly answer book costs nothing and protects you either way.

Where can I read about the actual process?

See our guide to the OSM process and the broader re-evaluation guide.

The Bottom Line

The 2026 pass rate is a data point, not a prediction. The more useful lesson is that your answer book now has an extra reader, the scanner, and a little care in presentation protects you from avoidable losses. If something still looks wrong at result time, you have a clear path to check your scanned copy.
