UP Board Answer Writing Format — New Pattern Ke Hisaab Se Kaise Likhein 2027

UP Board 2027 answer writing guide: new 6-criteria marking scheme, answer format for 1-mark, 2-mark, 3-mark, and 5-mark questions, presentation tips, and subject-wise writing templates to score maximum marks.

In short: UP Board examiners now follow a structured 6-criteria marking scheme for evaluating descriptive answers. Just knowing the content is not enough — how you write matters equally. This guide breaks down the new marking criteria, shows the exact format for each question type (1-mark to 5-mark), and provides subject-wise writing templates. Students who follow proper answer format consistently score 8-12 marks more than students with the same knowledge but poor presentation.

The New 6-Criteria Marking Scheme

UPMSP has standardized how examiners evaluate answers. The 6 criteria that determine your marks:

CriteriaWhat It MeansImpact on Marks
1. RelevanceIs the answer actually addressing the question asked?Wrong answer = zero, even if well-written
2. AccuracyAre the facts, formulas, and dates correct?Factual errors = marks deduction
3. CompletenessDoes the answer cover all parts of the question?Incomplete answer = partial marks only
4. ClarityIs the answer easy to read and understand?Confusing answers get fewer marks
5. PresentationNeat handwriting, diagrams, proper structure?Good presentation = benefit of doubt marks
6. ExpressionCorrect Hindi/English grammar and vocabulary?Poor language = impression marks lost

The first three criteria (Relevance, Accuracy, Completeness) determine the core marks. The last three (Clarity, Presentation, Expression) determine whether you get the full marks or lose 1-2 marks per answer.

Format for Each Question Type

1-Mark Questions (MCQ and Very Short Answer)

MCQ Section (20 marks):

  • Fill in the OMR sheet carefully
  • Use only blue/black ball pen
  • Completely darken the circle — partial darkening may not be read by machine
  • No overwriting — if you make a mistake, it cannot be corrected

Very Short Answer (1 mark descriptive):

  • Answer in one line or one sentence
  • No introduction or conclusion needed
  • Example: "State Ohm's Law" → "Ohm's Law states that the potential difference across a conductor is directly proportional to the current flowing through it, provided the temperature remains constant. Mathematically, V = IR."

2-Mark Questions

Format:

  • 2-3 sentences OR 2 points
  • No diagram required unless specifically asked
  • Write the definition/concept + one example or application

Template:

[Concept/Definition in 1-2 sentences]
[Example or application in 1 sentence]

Example — Science: Q: What is a chemical equation? (2 marks)

A: A chemical equation is a symbolic representation of a chemical reaction using chemical formulas and symbols. The reactants are written on the left side and products on the right side, separated by an arrow (→). Example: 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O

3-Mark Questions

Format:

  • 4-6 lines OR 3-4 points with brief explanation
  • Include a small diagram if relevant (adds 0.5-1 mark value)
  • Show working steps for numerical problems

Template:

[Point 1 with explanation — 1-2 lines]
[Point 2 with explanation — 1-2 lines]
[Point 3 with explanation OR diagram OR example — 1-2 lines]

Example — Social Science: Q: Explain the three reasons why power sharing is desirable. (3 marks)

A: (i) Prudential reason — Power sharing reduces the possibility of conflict between social groups. When power is shared among different communities, it leads to political stability.

(ii) Moral reason — In a democracy, people have the right to be consulted in governance. Power sharing is the very spirit of democracy.

(iii) Prevents tyranny — Concentration of power in one hand leads to misuse of authority. Sharing power among legislature, executive, and judiciary ensures checks and balances.

5-Mark Questions

Format:

  • 8-12 lines OR 5-6 detailed points
  • MUST include diagram/figure/flowchart where applicable
  • For numerical: Show every step with formula, substitution, and answer with units
  • For proofs: Write Given, To Prove, Construction, Proof steps, Hence Proved

Template for Theory Questions:

[Introduction — 1-2 lines]
[Point 1 with detail — 2 lines]
[Point 2 with detail — 2 lines]
[Point 3 with detail — 2 lines]
[Diagram if applicable]
[Conclusion — 1 line]

Template for Maths Proofs:

Given: [State what is given]
To Prove: [State what needs to be proved]
Construction: [Any additional lines drawn]
Proof:
Step 1: ...
Step 2: ...
...
Hence Proved.

Template for Science Numericals:

Given: [List all given values with units]
To Find: [What needs to be calculated]
Formula: [Write the formula]
Solution:
[Substitute values]
[Calculate step by step]
Answer: [Final answer with units]

Subject-Wise Answer Writing Tips

Maths Answer Writing

For Numerical Problems:

  1. Always write "Given:" and list all known values
  2. Write "To Find:" clearly
  3. Write the formula before substituting
  4. Show every calculation step — do not skip
  5. Box or underline the final answer
  6. Include units (cm, m², cm³)

For Proofs (BPT, Pythagoras):

  1. Draw the figure first — neat and labeled
  2. Write "Given" and "To Prove" separately
  3. Mention construction step
  4. Number each step of the proof
  5. End with "Hence Proved" or "QED"

For Graph Questions (Statistics, Coordinate Geometry):

  1. Use sharp pencil for graph
  2. Label both axes with variable names and scale
  3. Mark points clearly
  4. Draw smooth curve/line through points
  5. Write the answer extracted from the graph

Science Answer Writing

For Diagram-Based Questions:

  1. Draw with pencil — neat and proportionate
  2. Label all parts with straight label lines (use ruler)
  3. Write labels in pen (ink)
  4. Title the diagram
  5. Size: At least 1/4 of the page — small diagrams lose marks

For Chemical Equations:

  1. Write word equation first, then symbolic equation
  2. Balance the equation — marks are cut for unbalanced equations
  3. Write states: (s), (l), (g), (aq)
  4. Write conditions above the arrow (heat Δ, catalyst, etc.)

For Experiments/Activities:

  1. Aim → Apparatus → Procedure → Observation → Conclusion
  2. Observation table format is mandatory for tabular data
  3. Mention at least 2-3 precautions

Social Science Answer Writing

For Long Answers (History, Civics):

  1. Start with a brief context (1-2 lines of background)

Before vs After: Answer Quality Comparison

Weak Answer (3/5 marks): Q: Explain the process of photosynthesis. A: Photosynthesis is the process by which plants make food. They use sunlight and carbon dioxide and water. Chlorophyll is important. The food is glucose.

Strong Answer (5/5 marks): Q: Explain the process of photosynthesis. A: Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants prepare their food (glucose) using carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll.

Chemical Equation: 6CO₂ + 6H₂O → (sunlight/chlorophyll) → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂

Process: (i) Absorption of light energy by chlorophyll in leaves (ii) Conversion of light energy to chemical energy (ATP and NADPH) (iii) Reduction of CO₂ to carbohydrates using the chemical energy

Diagram: [Neat labeled diagram of leaf cross-section showing stomata, chloroplast]

Significance: Photosynthesis is the primary source of food and oxygen on Earth. Without it, life would not exist.

The difference: structure, diagram, chemical equation, and clear points.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does neat handwriting really matter in UP Board exams?

Yes. While there are no official marks for handwriting, examiners are human. A paper with neat, legible writing creates a positive first impression. When an answer is borderline (could be 3 or 4 marks), neat presentation often gets the benefit of doubt. Conversely, illegible handwriting may cause an examiner to miss correct points.

Should I attempt questions in serial order?

Not necessarily. Start with the questions you are most confident about. This builds momentum and ensures your best answers are written when you are most focused. However, clearly write the question number next to each answer so the examiner can find it easily.

What if I do not know the full answer to a 5-mark question?

Write whatever you know. In UP Board, step marks are awarded. Even writing the correct formula, a relevant diagram, or 2 out of 5 points will get you 1-3 marks. A blank answer gets zero. Partial attempt is always better than no attempt.

How many pages should I fill in the answer booklet?

Quality matters more than quantity. A well-structured 15-page answer booklet will score more than a 30-page booklet filled with irrelevant content. For a typical UP Board paper, 18-24 pages (both sides) is sufficient if you write with proper spacing and diagrams.

Should I use diagrams in Social Science answers too?

Yes, where relevant. In Geography, include map references. In Economics concepts within Social Science, include simple demand-supply type illustrations if applicable. In History, a timeline can be effective. Diagrams show depth of understanding and earn extra marks.

What pen color should I use?

Blue ball pen for writing. Black pen is also acceptable but blue is more commonly used and preferred by examiners for readability. Use pencil for diagrams, graphs, and maps. Do not use gel pens that smudge easily.

How do I handle the MCQ section — should I do it first or last?

Do MCQs first. Spend 25-30 minutes. MCQs require clear thinking and formula recall, which is better at the start when your mind is fresh. Mark any doubtful MCQs and return to them during the revision time. The 20 MCQ marks are the easiest marks on the paper.

Is there a word limit for long answers?

UP Board does not specify strict word limits, but examiners expect 150-200 words for 5-mark answers and 80-100 words for 3-mark answers. Writing much more than needed wastes time without adding marks. Writing too little means you probably missed points.
