NEET 2026 Paper Leak Timeline — What Changes for NEET 2027

NEET UG 2026 was cancelled after a paper leak. The timeline, who was held responsible, the confirmed changes for NEET 2027 CBT, and how to prepare.

In short: NEET UG 2026 was cancelled after a paper leak was confirmed, affecting approximately 22 to 23 lakh registered students — the largest exam cancellation in Indian history. The leak originated through physical networks in Bihar and Rajasthan, not through Telegram. NTA was restructured: all 47 officials involved in NEET UG were removed and a new task force was formed (Money Control). For 2027, NEET moves to a computer-based test (CBT) format spread over 5 to 6 days at approximately 1,000 centres (Indian Express). This post covers the complete timeline, the government's response, and every confirmed change for NEET 2027.

Last updated: October 29, 2026.

The Scale of What Happened

To understand why NEET 2027 is being restructured so fundamentally, you need to understand the scale of the 2026 cancellation:

MetricFigure
Students registered for NEET UG 2026Approximately 22 to 23 lakh
Exam cancelled before it could be heldYes — cancelled before the exam date
States where leak network was activeBihar, Rajasthan (confirmed), others under investigation
NTA officials removed47
New task force formedYes — high-level committee with external experts
Fake "re-exam leak" videos on TelegramMultiple — all confirmed fake by NTA and PIB Fact Check

This was not a repeat of NEET 2024, where the exam was held and grace marks were given to 1,563 students. In 2026, the exam was cancelled before it happened — a first in NEET's history.

Why the Leak Happened: What the Investigation Found

The NEET 2026 leak was not a digital hack. It was a physical network. Understanding this is important because it explains why CBT addresses the root cause:

The supply chain of a printed paper:

  1. Question papers are set by subject experts and stored in encrypted form
  2. Papers are sent to approved printing presses under security protocols
  3. Printed papers are sealed and transported to exam centres
  4. Papers are opened at the exam centre on exam day

The leak happened at step 2 or 3: individuals with physical access to the printing or transport process photographed or copied papers before they were sealed. The papers were then distributed through a network of middlemen — primarily in Bihar and Rajasthan — to coaching institutes and individual students who paid large sums (reportedly ₹30 to ₹50 lakh per paper in some cases).

Why Telegram was not the source:

The papers that appeared on Telegram were mostly fake — previous year papers or fabricated documents. The genuine leak happened through physical channels. This is the consistent pattern across every documented exam leak in India.

Papers printed weeks in advanceQuestions stored encrypted, delivered digitally at exam time
Physical transport to 500+ centresNo physical paper to transport
Printing press employees have accessNo printing press involved
One paper for all students on one dayDifferent question sets across sessions
A single leak compromises all studentsA leak of one session's paper affects only that session

What This Means for Your Preparation

The Good News

CBT is structurally harder to leak. There are no printed papers to photograph. Questions are delivered digitally at the time of the exam. Even if someone compromised one session's questions, it would not affect other sessions.

More centres means less travel stress. With approximately 1,000 centres, you are more likely to get a centre close to home. In 2026, many students had to travel to distant cities for their exam centre.

Normalisation is a well-understood process. JEE Main has used normalisation across sessions for years. The process is transparent and the formula is published. It is not a black box.

The New Challenges

CBT practice is essential. If you have only practised on paper, you need to get comfortable with a computer-based interface. Typing answers, using the on-screen calculator, navigating between questions on a screen, and managing the virtual scratchpad are all different from paper.

Multi-session anxiety is real. Students worry about whether different sessions have different difficulty levels. Normalisation addresses this, but understanding how it works reduces anxiety. For how the CBT format works, see our NEET 2027 CBT Mode Complete Guide.

The Syllabus: What Has Not Changed

The NEET 2027 syllabus is expected to remain based on Class 11 and 12 NCERT Biology, Physics and Chemistry. No official change to the syllabus has been announced as of October 29, 2026. The NTA website (nta.ac.in) will carry the official notification when it is released.

The Fake Telegram Leak: What Actually Happened

After the cancellation, multiple Telegram channels posted videos and images claiming to show the "re-exam paper." Here is what was confirmed:

ClaimReality
"Re-exam paper leaked on Telegram"NTA denied this. PIB Fact Check flagged it as false.
"Pay ₹500 for the answer key"Classic scam. No one with a real paper sells it for ₹500.
"10,000 students already downloaded"Fabricated social proof.
"Paper will be deleted in 2 hours"Manufactured urgency to prevent critical thinking.

NTA's official statement: "NTA categorically denies any paper leak for the re-examination. Legal action will be taken against those spreading misinformation" (The Statesman).

Frequently Asked Questions

Was NEET 2026 actually cancelled or just postponed?

NEET UG 2026 was cancelled. Students had to wait for NEET 2027, which is being restructured as a CBT exam. There was no re-exam for NEET 2026.

Will NEET 2027 have the same syllabus?

The syllabus is expected to remain based on Class 11 and 12 NCERT Biology, Physics and Chemistry. No official change to the syllabus has been announced. Check nta.ac.in for the official notification when it is released.

How does normalisation work in a multi-session exam?

Normalisation adjusts scores to account for differences in difficulty between sessions. The method NTA uses for JEE Main — and is expected to use for NEET 2027 — is based on the percentile of the student's score within their session. A student who scores at the 95th percentile in a harder session gets the same normalised score as a student at the 95th percentile in an easier session. The raw marks are converted to normalised marks, and the normalised marks are used for the merit list.

When will NEET 2027 registration open?

Registration is expected around February 2027. Watch nta.ac.in for the official notification. Do not rely on third-party websites for registration dates.

Is CBT harder than pen-and-paper?

The questions are the same difficulty. The interface is different. Students who practise on CBT platforms before the exam consistently report less anxiety on exam day. The main adjustments are: reading long Biology passages on a screen, using the on-screen calculator for Physics and Chemistry numericals, and managing time without the ability to physically flip through pages.

Where can I practise for CBT NEET 2027?

NTA's official mock test platform at nta.ac.in. SATHEE (sathee.prutor.ai), developed by IIT Kanpur with Ministry of Education support, offers free CBT practice for NEET. Both are free.

What happened to the students who were registered for NEET 2026?

Students registered for NEET 2026 will need to register again for NEET 2027. Their 2026 registration does not carry over. Check nta.ac.in for the official notification on eligibility and registration.
