Why You Need a Month-by-Month Plan
Most Class 10 students start serious board exam preparation only in December or January. By then, half the syllabus feels unfamiliar, sample papers seem impossible, and panic sets in. The result is rushed preparation, incomplete revision, and lower scores than their potential.
The students who score 90+ almost always have one thing in common: they started structured preparation by September. Not 8-hour study days or coaching classes on weekends. Just a clear plan of what to cover each month, followed consistently.
This guide breaks down the entire September to March timeline so you know exactly what to do and when. Follow this, and you will walk into the exam hall feeling prepared, not panicked.
September: Foundation Month
Goal: Complete 40-50% of the Syllabus
By September, your school has already covered 30-40% of the syllabus. Your job this month is to solidify what has been taught and start moving ahead.
Subject-Wise Plan
Maths (Target: Complete 4-5 chapters)
- Real Numbers (Chapter 1)
- Polynomials (Chapter 2)
- Pair of Linear Equations in Two Variables (Chapter 3)
- Quadratic Equations (Chapter 4)
- Arithmetic Progressions (Chapter 5)
These 5 chapters carry approximately 26 marks out of 80. Completing them now gives you a strong algebra foundation.
Science (Target: Complete 3-4 chapters)
- Chemical Reactions and Equations (Chapter 1)
- Acids, Bases and Salts (Chapter 2)
- Metals and Non-Metals (Chapter 3)
- Light - Reflection and Refraction (Chapter 10)
Start with Chemistry (Chapters 1-3) because they are heavily interconnected. Adding the Light chapter early gives you time to practice optics numericals.
Social Science (Target: Complete 4-5 chapters)
- Read through India and the Contemporary World (History): The Rise of Nationalism in Europe, Nationalism in India
- Read through Contemporary India (Geography): Resources and Development, Forest and Wildlife Resources
- Understand Democratic Politics: Power Sharing, Federalism
Do not memorize yet. Read to understand themes and connections.
English (Target: Complete prose chapters covered in class)
- Read all chapters of First Flight covered so far
- Read the corresponding Footprints Without Feet chapters
- Practice 2 writing formats (letter and article)
Daily Schedule for September
- Morning (1.5 hours): Maths or Science (alternate days)
- Evening (1 hour): Social Science or English (alternate days)
- Weekend (2 hours): Revision of the week's topics + solve 10-15 extra problems
Total: About 2.5 hours per day on weekdays, 2 hours on weekends.
October: Building Momentum
Goal: Complete 65-70% of the Syllabus
October is when pre-board exam schedules start getting announced. Schools usually cover most of the syllabus by October end. Stay aligned with your school but also work independently on chapters not yet covered in class.
Subject-Wise Plan
Maths (Target: Complete 4 more chapters)
- Triangles (Chapter 6)
- Coordinate Geometry (Chapter 7)
- Introduction to Trigonometry (Chapter 8)
- Some Applications of Trigonometry (Chapter 9)
These are geometry and trigonometry chapters that carry about 22 marks. Trigonometry especially needs practice as it is new for most students.
Science (Target: Complete 4 more chapters)
- Carbon and Its Compounds (Chapter 4)
- Life Processes (Chapter 6)
- Electricity (Chapter 12)
- Magnetic Effects of Electric Current (Chapter 13)
Electricity is the most numerical-heavy chapter in Class 10 Science. Start it early and solve at least 30-40 problems.
Social Science (Target: Complete 4-5 more chapters)
- History: The Age of Industrialisation, Print Culture and the Modern World
- Geography: Agriculture, Minerals and Energy Resources
- Economics: Development, Sectors of the Indian Economy
English
- Complete all remaining First Flight and Footprints chapters
- Practice notice writing and speech writing formats
- Start grammar exercises (tenses, reported speech, determiners)
Daily Schedule for October
- Morning (2 hours): Maths or Science
- Evening (1.5 hours): Social Science or English
- Weekend (3 hours): Practice problems from completed chapters + solve previous year MCQs
Total: About 3.5 hours per day.
November: Completion Month
Goal: Complete 90-100% of the Syllabus
Maths: Complete Circles, Areas Related to Circles, Surface Areas and Volumes, Statistics, and Probability. Mensuration carries about 10 marks and is formula-based. Statistics and Probability carry about 11 marks and are comparatively easier.
Science: Complete remaining chapters including Periodic Classification, Control and Coordination, Reproduction, Heredity, Human Eye, and Environment chapters. Biology chapters are theory-heavy but scoring.
Social Science: Complete Economics (Money and Credit, Globalisation) and Civics (Gender/Religion/Caste, Political Parties, Outcomes of Democracy), and Geography (Manufacturing Industries, Lifelines).
English: Complete grammar syllabus, practice 1 writing format per day, and re-read literature chapters focusing on themes.
December: First Revision Phase
Goal: Revise Entire Syllabus + Start Practice Papers
Week 1: Revise Maths. Solve 5 problems per chapter from NCERT exercises. Week 2: Revise Science. Re-read short notes, solve NCERT back-exercise questions. Week 3: Revise Social Science. Read through notes, practice map work. Week 4: Revise English literature. Re-read key chapters and practice all writing formats.
Begin solving CBSE sample papers, one per week under exam conditions (3-hour limit). Check answers against the official marking scheme. Study 3-4 hours per day.
January: Intensive Practice Phase
Goal: Solve 15-20 Practice Papers
January is peak preparation. Pre-boards usually happen in late January or early February. Solve 4 papers per week (1 per subject). Get papers from CBSE official sample papers, previous year papers (2024-2026), school pre-board papers, and reference books.
After every paper, track: total marks scored, marks lost to silly mistakes, marks lost to concept gaps, and time taken per section. This analysis directs your February focus.
Study 4-5 hours per day.
February: Final Revision and Polishing
By February, your practice paper analysis shows which chapters need more work. Spend Week 1 on targeted revision of weak areas. Week 2, do speed drills: 20-30 MCQs per subject daily, aiming for 1 minute per MCQ. Week 3, solve 2 final full-length papers per subject. Week 4 (if exams start late February), do light revision only: formula sheets, map work, writing formats, and 5-10 easy problems daily. Do not start any new topic.
March: Exam Month
The night before each exam: read short notes, sleep by 10 PM. Exam morning: 30-minute key points revision, proper breakfast, reach center early. Between papers (usually 2-5 day gaps): rest on day 1, focused revision of high-weightage chapters on days 2-3, practice paper on day 4 if available.
