WBJEE 2027 — Pattern, Negative Marking, Colleges and Plan

WBJEE 2027 guide: 155-question pattern, category-wise negative marking, Jadavpur University closing ranks, the 2026 timeline and a plan you can start now.

In short: WBJEEB has not released the WBJEE 2027 notification as of October 28, 2026. The exam is expected in April or May 2027, and last year's test was held on May 24, 2026. It is an offline OMR exam with two papers: Mathematics (75 questions, 100 marks) and Physics plus Chemistry (80 questions, 100 marks). Marks differ by question category, and so does negative marking. You need both papers for a General Merit Rank. This guide covers the pattern, a break-even calculation I ran, the Jadavpur University rank trend, a source conflict on negative marking, and a plan.

Last updated: October 28, 2026. Dates and the syllabus will be updated when WBJEEB publishes the 2027 notification.

What Is Confirmed and What Is Not

ItemStatus
Two papers, 155 questions, 200 marksConsistent across the sources I read
Category 1, 2 and 3 question typesConsistent across sources
Marks per category (1, 2 and 2)Not stated in the sources I could open. I worked it out from the paper totals (see below)
Negative marking: 1/4 for Category 1, 1/2 for Category 2, none for Category 3Reported in most sources. One source contradicts it (see below)
2027 datesNot announced
Official FAQ and information bookletI could not open the official FAQ PDF. Check wbjeeb.in for the 2027 booklet

Pattern: Category-Wise Breakdown

PaperSubjectCategory 1Category 2Category 3Total questionsMarks
IMathematics50151075100
IIPhysics30554050
IIChemistry30554050

How I worked out the marks per category

The sources I could open give the paper totals but not always the marks per category. A scheme of 1 mark for Category 1 and 2 marks each for Categories 2 and 3 fits the totals exactly:

  • Mathematics: 50 x 1 + 15 x 2 + 10 x 2 = 100
  • Physics: 30 x 1 + 5 x 2 + 5 x 2 = 50
  • Chemistry: 30 x 1 + 5 x 2 + 5 x 2 = 50

That is an arithmetic check, not an official statement. Confirm it in the 2027 booklet.

Question types

CategoryTypeAnswer rule
1Single correct optionOne correct answer
2Single correct optionOne correct answer, higher marks
3One or more correct optionsPartial marking applies. Per the sources, any wrong option chosen gives zero

Negative Marking: Sources Disagree

SourceWhat it says
Most sources and the Indian Express FAQ1/4 mark deducted for Category 1, 1/2 mark for Category 2, no deduction for Category 3
Indian Express highlights tableSays two marks are deducted for each incorrect answer in Categories 2 and 3

The highlights-table entry looks like an error. It conflicts with the same article's FAQ and with the other sources. I could not open the official FAQ PDF to settle it. Until WBJEEB publishes the 2027 booklet, use the 1/4 and 1/2 scheme for practice, and confirm before exam day.

Is guessing worth it? A calculation

Using the scheme above, a guess has a positive expected value when your chance of being right is high enough:

CategoryRightWrongBreak-even chance of being right
1+1-0.25Above 20%
2+2-0.5Above 20%
3Partial marks0Not applicable. Wrong options give zero, not a deduction

In both Category 1 and Category 2, the break-even is 20%. So if you can eliminate two of four options, a guess is usually worth taking. Category 3 carries no deduction, but one wrong option among those you choose gives zero for that question, so choose only the options you are sure about.

Illustration: Category 1 in Mathematics

These figures are arithmetic on the scheme above, not exam data. Take 50 Category 1 questions, all attempted:

AccuracyRightWrongMarks
100%50050.00
90%45543.75
80%401037.50
70%351531.25

Time per question

PaperQuestionsTimeMinutes per question
I (Mathematics)75120 minutes1.6
II (Physics and Chemistry)80120 minutes1.5

Since it is an OMR exam, plan time to fill the sheet as you go instead of leaving it to the last five minutes.

Ranks: Why You Need Both Papers

Papers attemptedRank you get
BothGeneral Merit Rank for engineering and architecture
Paper II onlyPharmacy rank only. Not accepted at Jadavpur University
Paper I onlyNo rank

This rule is reported by the sources I read, so confirm it in the 2027 booklet. If you skip a paper, you lose the engineering route.

Colleges and Closing Ranks

Jadavpur University: B.Tech closing ranks

The table shows FreeJobAlert's compiled data, which it labels as 2025 closing ranks with expected 2026 values. Ranks are for the Open category.

Source conflicts on cutoffs

SourceClaim
FreeJobAlertJadavpur CSE Open closed at 202 (2025 data)
MSNJadavpur CSE closed at 108 in round 1 of 2026, and Calcutta University CSE at 816
Indian ExpressJadavpur CSE in 2022 closed at 7 (All India) and 61 (Home State)
Jagran JoshJadavpur IT, General Home State, usually closes around 300 to 450

These figures are not comparable. They differ in year, round, quota (All India versus Home State) and category. Treat them as a range, not a single answer. Cutoffs also vary by round, so check the official opening and closing rank tables after counselling.

The October 2026 Jadavpur vacancy news

Careers360 reported on October 28, 2026 that Jadavpur University was running its own counselling from October 27 to 30, with a general cutoff rank of 12,000, to fill 182 vacant B.Tech seats. These included 33 in Civil and 11 in Electrical. B.Tech classes there began on October 12, and the vice chancellor said the delayed counselling meant admitting lower-ranked students. The state had allowed Jadavpur and Calcutta University to run their own counselling on October 13, and some students went to KIIT.

This does not mean Jadavpur is easy to enter. The vacancies came from a delayed state counselling process in 2026. The closing ranks in the table above are what applies during normal rounds. I could not confirm whether this will repeat in 2027.

2026 Timeline: A Guide to What May Repeat

Event2026 date

Counselling beginsAround June 29, 2026

Expect a similar sequence in 2027, and Careers360-style trackers give the registration window as likely from March 2027. The calendar sits close to JEE Main Session 2, so plan for both.

Syllabus and Board Link

WBJEE tests the Class 11 and 12 syllabus. If you study under the West Bengal board, your HS preparation already covers much of it. These guides show where the overlap is:

I have not matched the WBJEE syllabus topic by topic against the HS syllabus, so check the 2027 booklet for exact topics.

A Plan You Can Start Now

The exam is expected about 6 to 7 months away. This is my suggested structure, not an official plan.

PhaseTimingFocus
1Now to DecemberFinish Class 12 topics you have not covered. Build speed in Category 1 type questions
2January to HS boardsMaintain one hour a day on WBJEE problems. Give boards priority
3After HS boardsChapter-wise tests, then Category 2 and 3 practice
4Final 4 weeksTwo full OMR-style mocks a week with timing, and error review

Habits that fit this exam

HabitWhy
Practise Category 3 separatelyIt rewards careful reading and punishes one wrong option
Mark guesses in mocksCheck whether your guesses beat the 20% break-even
Do both papers in one sittingPaper I and II both count for the engineering rank
Practise filling the OMRWrong bubbling costs marks that no study can recover

If you are also writing JEE Main, the overlap is large. See how to prepare for JEE and board exams together and state board students' bridge for JEE Main.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has WBJEE 2027 been announced?

Not as of October 28, 2026. Sources expect the exam in April or May 2027, and one expects registration from March 2027. WBJEE 2026 was held on May 24, 2026. Watch the WBJEEB website for the official notification.

What is the WBJEE exam pattern?

It is an offline OMR exam with two papers of 2 hours each. Paper I is Mathematics with 75 questions for 100 marks. Paper II is Physics and Chemistry with 80 questions for 100 marks, so 155 questions and 200 marks in all.

What is the negative marking in WBJEE?

Most sources report 1/4 mark deducted for each wrong Category 1 answer, 1/2 mark for each wrong Category 2 answer, and no deduction in Category 3. One table in Indian Express says otherwise, but its own FAQ matches the other sources. Confirm in the 2027 booklet.

Do I need to attempt both papers?

Yes, for engineering and architecture. Both papers are needed for the General Merit Rank. Paper II alone gives only a Pharmacy rank, which Jadavpur University does not accept, and Paper I alone gives no rank.

What rank is needed for Jadavpur University CSE?

FreeJobAlert lists a 2025 Open closing rank of 202. Other sources show different figures (108 in round 1 of 2026, and 7 or 61 for 2022 depending on quota). The sources differ in year, round and category, so treat it as a top-few-hundred rank.

Should I guess in WBJEE?

For Category 1 and 2, the break-even chance of being right is 20%, so guesses that follow an elimination are usually worth taking. In Category 3, wrong options give zero, not a deduction, so choose only the options you are sure about.
