In short: For Telangana and AP Board Class 10 SSC exams, focus on high-weightage chapters like Quadratic Equations, Trigonometry, Light, and Electricity. Since Science is split into Physical Science and Biological Science papers, prepare for them separately. Read your prescribed textbooks thoroughly, practice neat diagrams, and solve previous year papers from 2022 to 2026 starting in December.
Who This Guide Is For
If you are preparing for the Class 10 SSC exams under the Telangana State Board (TSBSE) or the Andhra Pradesh Board (BSEAP), this guide will help you plan your preparation from start to finish. Both boards share a very similar syllabus and exam pattern, so most of the advice here applies to both.
Around 5 lakh students appear for the Telangana SSC exams and about 6 lakh for the AP SSC exams each year. The exam is usually held in March, and results come out in May or June.
Exam Pattern for TS and AP Board Class 10
Here is the exam structure you need to understand:
- Total papers: 6 (First Language, Second Language, English, Maths, Physical Science, Biological Science + Social Science)
- Each paper: 100 marks (80 marks written exam + 20 marks internal assessment for some subjects)
- Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on the subject
- Question types: Very Short Answer (1 mark), Short Answer (2 marks), Short Answer (4 marks), Long Answer/Essay (8 marks)
One important thing that makes these boards different from CBSE is that Science is split into two separate papers: Physical Science (Physics + Chemistry) and Biological Science (Biology). This means you have more papers to prepare for, but each paper covers less content.
Physical Science Paper Structure
- Part A: Physics (about 50 marks)
- Part B: Chemistry (about 50 marks)
- You get internal choice in essay-type questions
- Numerical problems appear in both Physics and Chemistry sections
Biological Science Paper Structure
- Part A: Biology (about 50 marks)
- Part B: This part combines with Social Science in the composite paper or is separate depending on the year
- Diagrams carry significant marks in Biology
Chapter-Wise Strategy for Physical Science
Physics Chapters
The Physics section covers topics like Heat, Chemical Equations and Reactions, Reflection of Light, Refraction of Light, Human Eye, Electric Current, Electromagnetism, and Principles of Metallurgy.
Key chapters to focus on:
-
Reflection of Light and Refraction of Light together carry about 15 to 20 marks. Learn ray diagrams, mirror formula, lens formula, and sign conventions. Practice numerical problems on image distance and magnification.
-
Electric Current is another high-weightage chapter. Learn Ohm's law, series and parallel circuits, and power calculations. Practice at least 10 numerical problems from this chapter.
-
Chemical Equations and Reactions is important for both theory and practical-based questions. Learn to balance equations and identify reaction types (combination, decomposition, displacement, double displacement).
-
Electromagnetism is a predictable chapter. Learn about electromagnets, Fleming's left-hand rule, electric motor, and electromagnetic induction. Diagrams are important here.
Chemistry Chapters
Chemistry chapters include Acids, Bases and Salts, Structure of Atom, Classification of Elements, Chemical Bonding, Carbon and its Compounds, and Metals and Non-metals.
Key chapters to focus on:
-
Carbon and its Compounds is one of the most important chapters. Learn about hydrocarbons, functional groups, homologous series, and naming of organic compounds. This chapter has both theory and reaction-based questions.
-
Acids, Bases and Salts is a chapter where you can score full marks if you learn the properties, reactions, and indicators properly. Practice writing word equations and balanced chemical equations.
-
Classification of Elements covers the periodic table. Learn the trends in properties (atomic size, ionization energy, electronegativity) across periods and down groups.
-
Structure of Atom covers Bohr's model, electron configuration, and quantum numbers at a basic level. This is mostly theory-based and straightforward to study.
Chapter-Wise Strategy for Biological Science
Biology chapters include Life Processes, Nutrition, Respiration, Transportation, Excretion, Control and Coordination, Reproduction, Heredity and Evolution, and Our Environment.
Key focus areas:
-
Life Processes (Nutrition, Respiration, Transportation, Excretion) together form the biggest chunk of the Biology paper. Learn the processes in both plants and animals. Diagrams of the digestive system, respiratory system, heart, and nephron are almost always asked.
-
Control and Coordination covers the nervous system and endocrine system. Learn the structure of the neuron, reflex arc, and functions of major hormones. A diagram of the human brain with labeling is a common 4-mark question.
-
Reproduction covers both sexual and asexual reproduction in plants and animals. Learn the parts of a flower, pollination, fertilization, and the human reproductive system.
-
Heredity covers Mendel's experiments and basic genetics. Practice Punnett square problems for monohybrid crosses.
Mathematics Strategy
The Maths syllabus for both TS and AP boards covers Real Numbers, Sets, Polynomials, Pair of Linear Equations, Quadratic Equations, Progressions, Coordinate Geometry, Similar Triangles, Trigonometry, Mensuration, Statistics, and Probability.
Chapter-wise tips:
-
Quadratic Equations and Progressions (AP and GP) are the most important chapters for scoring. Together they carry about 20 marks. Practice solving equations by factorization and using the quadratic formula. For progressions, learn the nth term and sum formulas.
-
Trigonometry is predictable. Learn the ratios for standard angles (0, 30, 45, 60, 90 degrees), trigonometric identities, and heights and distances problems. Practice at least 15 problems from heights and distances.
-
Coordinate Geometry covers distance formula, section formula, area of triangle, and equation of a line. These are formula-based and easy to score if you know the formulas.
-
Similar Triangles is a theory-heavy chapter. Learn the criteria for similarity (AA, SAS, SSS) and the Basic Proportionality Theorem (Thales theorem). Proof-based questions from this chapter are common.
-
Mensuration covers surface area and volume of combinations of solids (cone + cylinder, hemisphere + cylinder, etc.). Practice identifying which formulas to use for combined shapes.
-
Statistics and Probability are relatively easy. Learn mean, median, and mode for grouped data. Probability questions are usually direct.
Social Science Strategy
Social Science has History, Geography, Civics, and Economics sections.
-
History covers the Indian National Movement, World Wars, and post-independence India. Make a timeline for each chapter. Focus on key events, dates, and personalities.
-
Geography covers resources, agriculture, industries, and population. Map work is important. Practice marking rivers, mountain ranges, mineral deposits, and industrial centers on the map of India.
-
Civics chapters on the Indian Constitution, fundamental rights, and governance are straightforward. Read the textbook carefully and you can answer most questions directly.
-
Economics covers development, poverty, food security, and globalization. Understand the concepts rather than memorizing definitions. Use real-world examples to remember points.
Differences Between TS Board and AP Board
While the syllabus is very similar, there are some differences:
- Textbook publishers may differ. TSBSE and BSEAP have their own prescribed textbooks.
- Question paper patterns are set by different examination boards, so the exact format of questions (number of 1-mark vs 4-mark questions) may differ slightly.
- Internal assessment weightage and calculation methods may vary.
- Medium options: Both boards offer Telugu, Urdu, Hindi, and English medium options.
For your preparation, the core content is the same. If you study the concepts thoroughly, you can handle either board's paper.

Common Mistakes Students Make
- Not practicing the separate Physical Science and Biological Science papers individually. Since these are separate exams, prepare for them separately.
- Ignoring numerical problems in Physics and Chemistry. About 15 to 20 marks in Physical Science come from numericals.
- Drawing rough diagrams. Neat, labeled diagrams can earn you 3 to 4 extra marks per paper.
- Writing too little for essay-type (8-mark) questions. You need at least 1 page of content for an 8-mark answer. See our guide on how to write answers in board exams to score maximum for proper answer length and presentation.
- Not checking the question paper for internal choice. Many students miss the choice and answer all questions, wasting time.
Digital Study Tools
When you have separate papers for Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Maths, organizing your study time becomes tricky. Using a structured digital tool can help.
On Padhaao, you can study all chapters from both the Telangana and AP Board syllabi with explanations, practice questions, and quick revision modes. It covers both boards, so you do not need separate resources even if your friends are on a different board.
Final Advice
The TS and AP Board SSC exams test your understanding of basic concepts. The questions are straightforward if you have read the textbook carefully and practiced enough problems. Do not rely only on guides or question banks. Read the textbook first, then use other resources for practice.
Start today if you have not started already. Consistency over the next few months will decide your score, not last-minute cramming. A daily study timetable for Class 10 can help you build that consistency. You have enough time. Use it well.
