What Makes Tamil Nadu Exams Unique

Tamil Nadu follows the Samacheer Kalvi system with distinctive features:

  • 100-mark written paper with no separate internal assessment for the board exam
  • 8-mark essay questions (Part IV) requiring detailed 1.5-2 page answers
  • Internal choice in Parts II, III, and IV — use this strategically
  • More chapters than CBSE (23 in Science, 24+ in Social Science)
  • Tamil Nadu-specific content in Science and Social Science

For the complete syllabus, see the Tamil Nadu Board syllabus 2027.

Preparation Timeline

Now - January 2027: Complete Syllabus + Practice

You have about 5 months until the SSLC exam. Finish all chapters including Tamil Nadu-specific topics (logic gates in Physics, molarity in Chemistry, plant anatomy in Biology).

Focus on the highest-weightage chapters: TN Science weightage and TN Maths weightage.

February 2027: Practicals + Revision

SSLC practicals happen February 19-26. Prepare your practical file, practice all experiments, and revise viva questions. After practicals, shift fully to theory revision.

March 1-16: Final Revision

Two weeks before the SSLC theory exam starts. Solve 3-5 practice papers under timed conditions. Focus on 8-mark answer writing.

March 17 onwards: Exam Mode

Follow the gap-between-papers strategy. The SSLC exam spans almost a month (Mar 17 - Apr 12), so there are generous gaps between papers.

8-Mark Question Strategy

Tamil Nadu's 8-mark questions (Part IV) are unique. You answer 2 out of 4. Tips:

  1. Read all 4 questions before choosing. Pick the 2 you know best.
  2. Write 1.5-2 pages per answer with numbered points.
  3. Include a diagram wherever relevant — diagrams within 8-mark answers carry separate marks.
  4. Cover all aspects of the topic comprehensively.
  5. Common 8-mark topics: Indian National Movement, Life Processes, Electricity, Indian Constitution.

See the Tamil Nadu important questions 2027 for expected 8-mark topics.

Subject-Wise Preparation

Science (100 marks)

Focus on Electricity (8-10m), Optics (7-8m), Chemical Reactions (6-7m), Life Processes (8-10m), Genetics (5-6m). Practice the complete Science formulas — most overlap with Tamil Nadu syllabus.

Mathematics (100 marks)

Focus on Algebra, Trigonometry, Statistics, Coordinate Geometry. Tamil Nadu includes Sets, Relations, and Matrices at Class 10 — study these from the Samacheer Kalvi textbook, not NCERT.

Social Science (100 marks)

Focus on Indian National Movement (with Tamil Nadu's role), Resources of India and Tamil Nadu, Indian Constitution, GDP and Development. See the Tamil Nadu Social Science weightage.

Exam Day Tips

  1. Use the internal choice wisely. Read ALL questions before answering in Parts II-IV.
  2. Time allocation: Part I (15 min), Part II (25 min), Part III (90 min), Part IV (30 min), review (10-15 min).
  3. 8-mark answers first if you are confident — they carry the most marks per question.
  4. Diagrams with every Science answer that has a visual component.
