NCERT New Textbooks 2027 — Subject Wise Deleted and Added Topics

Complete list of NCERT textbook changes for 2026-27: deleted chapters, added topics, revised content in Science, Maths, SST, English for Class 8-12. Impact on CBSE boards and NEET preparation.

In short: NCERT has made sweeping changes to textbooks for the 2026-27 session across Classes 8-12. Class 9 English lost 13 texts and got a brand-new book called "Kaveri." History chapters have been reshuffled between Classes 9 and 10. Biology has 25+ revisions affecting NEET aspirants. Mughal and Delhi Sultanate content has been trimmed across classes. SST chapters on the Preamble and secularism have been modified. If you are studying from old editions, you are studying the wrong syllabus. This post covers every major change, subject by subject.

Why This Matters — Old Books Are No Longer Enough

Every year, NCERT makes minor corrections to textbooks. But the 2026-27 changes are different. These are not small typo fixes — entire chapters have been removed, added, or moved between classes. The changes affect:

  • Board exam preparation — Questions will be set from the new editions only
  • NEET and competitive exams — Biology revisions change what is considered "correct" information
  • Study material — Coaching notes and guides based on old editions may contain outdated content

Bottom line: If your textbook does not say "2026-27 Edition" on the cover, get the updated version immediately. CBSE has confirmed that board exam questions will follow the new syllabus exclusively.

Class 9 English — Kaveri Replaces Beehive and Moments

This is one of the biggest single changes. The familiar Beehive (main reader) and Moments (supplementary reader) have been replaced by a single book called Kaveri.

DetailOld (Beehive + Moments)New (Kaveri)
Number of books2 separate books1 combined book
Total texts29 (prose + poetry + supplementary)16 texts
Texts removed—13 texts dropped
FocusWide variety, some dated selectionsStreamlined, updated selections
Exam patternSeparate sections for each bookSingle unified paper

Impact: Students using old Beehive/Moments books will be studying texts that are no longer in the syllabus. Literature questions in the board exam will come exclusively from Kaveri.

Class 9 History — Major Chapter Reshuffling

Several high-weightage History chapters have been moved from Class 9 to Class 10:

ChapterOld ClassNew ClassWhy It Matters
The French RevolutionClass 9Class 10Was a favourite board exam chapter
Nazism and the Rise of HitlerClass 9Class 10Heavy on dates and events
Socialism in Europe and the Russian RevolutionClass 9Class 10Now part of Class 10 board syllabus

What this means for Class 9 students: Your History syllabus is significantly lighter in 2026-27. But if you are in Class 10, you now have these three additional chapters to cover for your board exam.

What this means for Class 10 students: The History section of your Social Science paper just got denser. Plan extra time for these topics.

Class 9 Social Science — Chapters Dropped

Three chapters have been removed entirely from the Class 9 SST syllabus:

Dropped ChapterSubject AreaReason
Clothing: A Social HistoryHistoryConsidered supplementary content
History and Sport: The Story of CricketHistoryRemoved to streamline syllabus
One additional chapterGeography/CivicsPart of overall content rationalization

These chapters will not appear in any exam — neither internal assessments nor annual exams. Do not waste time studying them from old textbooks.

Class 8 Social Science — Preamble and Secular References

This change has generated significant public discussion:

ChangeDetails
Preamble omittedThe full text of the Indian Constitution's Preamble has been removed from the chapter on the Constitution
References to "secular"Reduced or removed in the context of describing India's constitutional identity
Impact on examsQuestions on the Preamble text are unlikely in the new syllabus

For students: Focus on what is in your current edition. Do not study the Preamble text as an exam topic unless your teacher specifically includes it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Can I use my older sibling's NCERT books for 2026-27?

Only if they are the same edition. Check the copyright page — it should mention the 2026-27 session. If it says 2024-25 or earlier, it is outdated for several subjects, especially English (Class 9), History (Class 9-10), and Biology (Class 11-12).

Q2: Will CBSE ask questions from deleted chapters?

No. CBSE has confirmed that all questions will be based on the current syllabus and the 2026-27 edition of NCERT textbooks. Deleted chapters are completely out of scope.

Q3: Are the changes the same for ICSE and state boards?

No. These changes are specific to NCERT textbooks. ICSE follows its own curriculum and textbooks. However, state boards that use NCERT books (like many CBSE-affiliated schools in various states) will be affected.

Q4: Where can I download the new NCERT books for free?

Visit the official NCERT website (ncert.nic.in) and navigate to the textbook section. All books are available for free download in PDF format. Make sure you select the 2026-27 edition.

Q5: My coaching material is based on old NCERT. What should I do?

For Biology (NEET), this is a real concern. Cross-check every chapter's key facts with the new NCERT. For other subjects, the coaching material is likely still 90% accurate, but verify any topic where wording has changed. Ask your coaching centre if they have released updated notes.

Q6: Will the board exam pattern change because of these textbook changes?

The exam pattern (sections, marks distribution, question types) remains largely the same. What changes is the content from which questions are drawn. The structure of the paper follows the CBSE SQP — only the specific topics and texts within each section reflect the new syllabus.

What You Should Do Right Now

  1. ✅ Download or buy the 2026-27 NCERT editions for all your subjects
  2. ✅ If you are in Class 9 English, get Kaveri immediately — Beehive and Moments are obsolete
  3. ✅ NEET aspirants: Compare old and new Biology NCERT chapter by chapter
  4. ✅ Do not rely on older reference books or guides until they release updated editions
  5. ✅ Check the CBSE sample question papers — they already reflect the new syllabus
  6. ✅ Inform your study group and friends — many students are unaware of these changes

Studying the right content is half the battle. Make sure your books match your syllabus.
