The Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE) conducts the Class 10 board exam for over 11 lakh students every year. Like most state boards, MP Board has its own syllabus and textbooks that differ from CBSE, yet most online study resources are made for CBSE students.
This guide is specifically for MPBSE students.

MP Board vs CBSE: Key Differences
| Aspect | MP Board (MPBSE) | CBSE |
|---|---|---|
| Textbooks | MP Board prescribed (largely follows NCERT but with state modifications) | NCERT |
| Medium | Hindi medium (majority) and English medium | Primarily English medium |
| Question paper style | Mix of objective (30-40%) and subjective | 20% MCQ + subjective |
| State-specific content | MP history, geography, and culture in Social Science | Pan-India content |
| Exam board | MPBSE, Bhopal | CBSE, New Delhi |
| Passing marks | 33% | 33% |
Important note: MP Board has been progressively aligning with NCERT in recent years. Many chapters overlap with NCERT, but the textbook organization and some state-specific content remain different.
Subject-Wise Strategy
Mathematics
MP Board Maths is moderately difficult. The paper has both objective and subjective sections.
Objective section (about 30-35 marks):
- One-word answers, fill in the blanks, true/false, MCQs
- Direct formula-based questions
- If you know all formulas, this section is free marks
High-weightage topics:
- Quadratic Equations: guaranteed 5-8 mark question every year
- Trigonometry: identities, heights and distances (8-10 marks)
- Statistics: mean, median, mode (5-8 marks, very scoring)
- Coordinate Geometry: distance, section formula, area (5-8 marks)
- Surface Area and Volume: formula application (5 marks)
Tip: MP Board gives partial marks generously. Even if you cannot complete a numerical, write the formula, substitute the values, and show whatever steps you can. You will get 2-3 marks out of 5.
Science
MP Board Science covers Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in one paper.
Physics priorities:
- Light: Mirror formula, lens formula, ray diagrams (highest marks in Physics)
- Electricity: Ohm's law, series-parallel resistance, power calculation
- Magnetic Effects: Solenoid, motor, generator diagrams
Chemistry priorities:
- Chemical Reactions and Equations: Balancing is compulsory. Practice 20+ equations.
- Carbon Compounds: Know functional groups, soap vs detergent
- Periodic Classification: Trends across periods and groups
Biology priorities:
- Life Processes: Digestive system, respiratory system, heart diagram
- Reproduction: Flower diagram, human reproductive system
- Heredity: Mendel's experiments, dominant and recessive traits
Diagram tip: MP Board examiners give 2-3 marks for well-drawn, labeled diagrams. Always draw with a pencil and label neatly.
Hindi
MP Board Hindi uses a state-prescribed textbook with different prose and poetry selections from CBSE.
Guaranteed scoring sections:
- Letter writing (patra lekhan): 5 marks, always asked
- Essay writing (nibandh): 5 marks, practice 10 common topics including MP-specific ones like "Madhya Pradesh ki Sanskriti" or "Narmada Nadi"
- Grammar (vyakaran): sandhi, samas, alankar, muhavare, ras — 15-20 marks total
Literature tip: Focus on bhavarth (meaning) of poems and character sketches of prose. These are the most commonly asked question types.
Social Science
This is where MP Board differs most from CBSE:
History:
- Indian independence movement (similar to CBSE)
- MP-specific history: Rani Durgavati, Bundela Rajput resistance, tribal movements in MP
- Modern India: post-independence development
Geography:
- India's physical features, climate, natural vegetation
- MP-specific: Narmada basin, Vindhya and Satpura ranges, major crops of MP, mineral resources of MP
- Map work: practice marking MP's districts, rivers, and mountains
Civics and Economics:
- Democracy, federalism, political parties (similar to CBSE)
- Indian economy: development, sectors, consumer rights
- MP-specific economic development and government schemes
Tip: MP-specific chapters in History and Geography are easy marks. They are unique to your board and the questions are usually straightforward.
English
MP Board English includes reading comprehension, grammar, and literature.
Scoring strategy:
- Grammar section (15-20 marks): tenses, voice change, narration, prepositions. Most reliable marks in the paper. Practice daily.
- Reading comprehension (10 marks): read slowly, answer in complete sentences. Quote from the passage.
- Writing section: letter, paragraph, or story. Follow the format exactly.
Month-Wise Preparation Plan
| Month | Focus |
|---|---|
| October | Complete all remaining chapters. No new topics after this month. |
| November | Solve MP Board model papers (available on MPBSE website and MP Online). One paper per subject per week. |
| December | Revise weak chapters. Focus on diagrams, formulas, and writing practice. |
| January | Full mock exams under timed conditions. Practice the objective section separately (time target: 30-40 minutes for 30 marks). |
| February | Final revision. Key Points mode. Formulas, dates, diagrams only. |
| March | Light revision. Exam day preparation. |
Common Mistakes MP Board Students Make
- Not practicing the objective section separately: 30-35 marks are objective. Many students lose 10-15 marks here due to carelessness. Practice MCQs, fill-in-the-blanks, and true/false separately.
- Studying from CBSE resources only: While MP Board overlaps with NCERT, state-specific content (MP history, geography, Hindi literature) is not in NCERT.
- Ignoring English grammar: Grammar is the easiest section in English and carries 15-20 marks. Many Hindi-medium students neglect it.
- Messy presentation: MP Board gives marks for neat handwriting and proper diagrams. Write with clear margins, underline headings, and number your answers.
- Not solving MPBSE model papers: The state board publishes model papers every year. Solve them. The actual paper follows a similar pattern.
