How to Study Maths When You Hate Maths: A Practical Guide

You are not bad at Maths. You just have not found the right approach yet. A step-by-step guide to overcoming maths phobia and actually improving your scores.

Let us start with an uncomfortable truth: most students who say "I hate Maths" actually mean "I do not understand Maths, and not understanding it makes me feel stupid, which makes me avoid it, which makes me understand it even less."

It is a cycle. And it can be broken. Not with motivation posters or "just practice more" advice, but with a specific, practical approach.

Why You Think You Are Bad at Maths

Research from the University of Chicago shows that maths anxiety is real. It activates the same brain regions as physical pain. When you open your Maths textbook and feel dread, your brain is literally treating it as a threat.

But here is what the same research shows: maths anxiety is not about ability. It is about experience. Students who had negative early experiences with Maths (a teacher who shamed them, a test they failed badly, being compared to a sibling) develop anxiety that has nothing to do with their actual mathematical capability.

You are not bad at Maths. You are anxious about Maths. These are different problems with different solutions.

The 4-Week Recovery Plan

This is not for students who are already good at Maths and want to score 95%. This is for students who feel sick when they see a Maths problem and want to get to a point where they can solve basic board exam questions confidently.

Week 1: Go Back to Where You Stopped Understanding

Maths is sequential. If you do not understand Chapter 3, you cannot do Chapter 7. Most students who "hate Maths" have a gap somewhere in Class 7-9 that was never fixed.

What to do:

  • Open your Maths textbook from the beginning
  • Solve the first exercise of each chapter (the easiest problems)
  • When you hit a chapter where you cannot solve even the easy problems, that is your gap
  • Spend 2-3 days on that chapter's basics before moving forward

Common gaps:

  • Fractions and decimals (Class 6-7)
  • Algebraic expressions and equations (Class 7-8)
  • Geometry basics: angles, triangles, circles (Class 7-9)
  • Coordinate geometry: plotting points, distance formula (Class 9)

Week 2: Learn the Formula, Then Learn What It Means

Most students memorize formulas without understanding them. This works for one test, then the formula disappears from memory.

Instead, for each formula:

  1. Write the formula
  2. Write what each letter represents
  3. Solve ONE example with the formula (from your textbook, not your head)
  4. Change the numbers slightly and solve again
  5. Now close the book and write the formula from memory

Example for the Quadratic Formula:

x = (-b plus or minus the square root of (b squared minus 4ac)) divided by 2a

  • a, b, c are the coefficients in ax squared + bx + c = 0
  • The part under the root (b squared minus 4ac) is called the discriminant
  • If the discriminant is positive: two real solutions
  • If the discriminant is zero: one real solution
  • If the discriminant is negative: no real solutions

Now solve: 2x squared + 5x - 3 = 0. Here, a=2, b=5, c=-3. Substitute and calculate.

Understanding WHY the formula works means you will not forget it under exam pressure.

Week 3: Practice Only Easy and Medium Problems

Here is the mistake almost everyone makes: they jump to the hard problems in the exercise because "those are the ones that come in exams." When they cannot solve them, they feel worse.

The 100-problem rule:

  • Solve 100 EASY problems across all chapters first
  • Easy means: you can solve it in 2-3 minutes without help
  • This builds confidence and speed
  • After 100 easy problems, medium problems feel less scary
  • After 50 medium problems, hard problems become attempt-able

You are training your brain to associate Maths with success, not failure.

Week 4: Solve Previous Year Papers (With a Calculator First)

Wait, calculators are not allowed in the exam. So why use one?

Because the goal of Week 4 is to learn the METHOD, not the arithmetic. Many students can set up a problem correctly but make a calculation error in step 3 and get the wrong answer. They think they did not understand the concept. They did. They just made an arithmetic mistake.

Steps:

  1. Solve a previous year paper with a calculator. Focus on whether you know WHAT to do for each question.
  2. Mark questions where you did not know the method (not the ones where you just made a calculation error).
  3. Study only those topics.
  4. Now solve the same paper without a calculator. Time yourself.

5 Specific Techniques That Work

1. The Copy-Then-Solve Method

Open a solved example in your textbook. Copy every step by hand (do not just read it). Copying forces your brain to process each step actively. After copying, close the book and solve a similar problem on your own.

2. Talk Through the Problem

Before writing anything, describe the problem out loud: "Okay, this is a quadratic equation. I need to find x. The coefficient of x squared is 3, of x is 7, and the constant is -2. I will use the quadratic formula." Speaking slows you down and prevents careless mistakes.

3. Solve Backwards

Take a solved problem from the answer key. Start from the answer and work backwards to understand each step. This is especially useful for Geometry proofs and Trigonometry identities.

4. Study with a Timer, Not a Clock

Set a 25-minute timer (Pomodoro technique). Tell yourself: "I will do Maths for exactly 25 minutes, then stop." Knowing there is an end point reduces anxiety. After 25 minutes, take a 5-minute break. Then do another 25 minutes.

Most students who "hate" Maths can handle 25 minutes of it. That is enough to solve 5-8 problems and make real progress.

5. Separate Understanding from Speed

First: understand the concept (take as long as you need). Then: practice for speed (use a timer). Never try to do both at once. Understanding under time pressure creates panic.

What to Do the Week Before a Maths Exam

  • Revise all formulas (write them once per day for 5 days)
  • Solve one full previous year paper under timed conditions
  • Focus on Sections A and B (MCQs and 2-mark questions) — these carry 30 marks and are easier
  • For 5-mark questions: know the method even if you cannot complete the calculation. Partial marks are given for correct steps.
